Italy Part One: Milano

Hey,

Wahhh my Italy travel posts are so overdue! It's been 6 weeks (wow) since the boy and I got on a plane to Bologna, ready for our Italian adventure.

We've both wanted to go to Italy for ages but it always seemed a little out of reach and if we were going to do it, we were going to do it right - and by right I mean eating and drinking as much as possible, all the while soaking up as much Italian magic as we could fit into seven days.

By happy accident, or idiotic mistake (however you want to look at it) we ended up travelling to three differnt areas in the north. We originally wanted to head to the Amalfi Coast, but we weren't sure as the flights available were neither cheap nor convenient. I found some flights to Bologna for half the price on Ryanair and excitedly booked them, thinking we could just travel straight across to the coast; a vast mountain range had other ideas...

With the trip up to our preferred seaside destination on the north west coast taking a good few hours on the train, we decided to break up the journey by staying in Milan. Enjoy part one of my Italian travel posts!

First Outfit
Sunglasses - Prada via Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet
Long stripe top - Ragged Priest
Leather/suede backpack - Oasis
Velcro sandals - Vagabond

Second Outfit
Choker - New Look
Lace-up front dress - Glamorous

We only stayed in the beautiful city of Milan for one night, though we felt like it was just enough. Milan is a city which is heavily centered around fashion and shopping and even though I didn't have the cash to blow in the likes of Dolce and Gabbana, Prada and Versace, it was amazing to window shop these gorgeous glossy boutiques.

We mostly just wandered around, taking in the beautiful architecture and soaking up our first experience of an Italian city. We wandered through one of the city's parks, got gelato (pistachio and coconut scoops, yum!), drank coffee, ate fresh pasta and admired the incredible cathedral in the centre - Duomo di Milano.

If we'd stayed longer, I would have definitely liked to pay the small fee to take a tour inside the cathedral. The Duomo di Milano is absolutely breathtaking from the outside, with its powerful presence over the city and stunning detail covering every inch. I can only imagine that inside is just as impressive!

And if I'd had the budget, I would have loved to blow it Prada's flagship store in the Gallerie Vittorio Emanuele - the historical glass roofed arcade by Duomo. I'll have to make do with my Prada sunnies for now!

McArthur Glen Accessories Challenge: Part Two

Hello!

So, in my previous post I wrote about my trip to Cheshire Oaks designer outlet as part of McArthur Glen's spring accessories style challenge. I was tasked with finding two accessories under £250 which I could style up in different ways for the spring season.

Well here it is; the big reveal. I am so in love with the accessories I chose!

Lulu Guinness 50:50 Lips Hug and Hold Clutch*
Prada Poeme Sunglasses @ David Clulow Eyewear*

Before my trip to Cheshire Oaks, my heart was set on getting a bag from Lulu Guinness. I've wanted one of her acrylic lips box clutches for ages, though the one I got in the end changed my mind! It's an oversized clutch in patent leather and I love the classic design and neutral colours - with the signature Lulu Guinness lips motif, of course.

I wasn't planning on buying sunglasses but after trying on these amazing Prada shades, I couldn't think about anything else for the rest of the shopping trip!

I was so impressed that I was able to buy both of these designer accessories for less than £250. The Lulu Guinness clutch has an RRP of £195 but was just £78 in the outlet shop. The sunglasses retail at £250 and are available current season everywhere, including Selfridges - they were £143 which I think is a really great discount.

I've snapped five different looks with these accessories, below.

Look One: All Black Errthang

Longline black coat - Boohoo
High neck ribbed crop top - In The Style
Midi skirt - Banana Republic*

I feel like this look is a bit Kim K! This isn't really a trend; it's no secret that I love black and this is just a really simple but chic outfit that I'm totally comfortable in.

Look Two: Suede and Floral

Black suede fringed jacket - vintage, from Amsterdam
Floral cut-out dress - Forever 21
Suede-look thigh high boots - Public Desire

Something a bit more boho! I don't really do girly so if I'm wearing something like this floral dress, I'd normally throw a big jacket over it. This fringed suede jacket of dreams is a recent buy from my trip to Amsterdam. I picked it up in a really cool vintage shop for only about £18. I could have bought so much in there but had to think about my hand luggage space...

Look Three: Sports Luxe

Longline blazer - Monki
Cropped Ellesse tee - Bank Fashion
Jeans - Primark
Trainers - Adidas (Stan Smiths)

I wear this Monki blazer all the time; it has to be one of the best things I've ever bought. It instantly smartens up any outfit and is great to wear as a light coat for the spring. I picked this bright Ellesse top in the Bank closing down sale recently for just £10. I used to wear Ellesse clothes all the time when I was younger so the brand has a bit of retro nostalgia for me.

Look Four: Evening Out

Leopard jacket - vintage via charity shop
Velvet high neck crop top - River Island
Earrings - Susan Caplan @ ASOS
Gold collar necklace - Primark
Gold chain belt - Blitz Vintage
Riding pants - American Apparel
Heels - Vivienne Westwood X Melissa

This is the sort of thing I'd wear on a date night with Chris. This vintage leopard print jacket is another one of my all-time favourites - I picked it up for around £3 from a charity shop back home! I'm also wearing my new Vivienne Westwood shoes which I got in the January sales; I was praying that they'd be comfortable but sadly not, great restaurant shoes though.

Look Five: Glam Grunge

Leather jacket - vintage via Mum
Chokers - eBay (tattoo) and ASOS (tartan heart)
Checked shirt - vintage via Reading Fest
Ribbed crop top - Topshop
Moons and stars leather belt - vintage via charity shop
Ripped jeans - Ragged Priest
Boots -Vagabond

It had stopped raining by the time I got around to my fifth and final outfit (typical Manchester!), so I decided to venture outside for photos. This was my favourite outfit of the five so I was glad to get some good shots of it. My style (at least on the weekends) is quite grunge-y but I really like how my shiny new accessories glam this look up a little.

What do you think of the accessories I chose and which is your favourite look?

Oh Velvet!

The title is for my Birmingham readers by the way- it alludes to a bar on Broad Street of the same name. My last memory of being in there was of me dressed as an alien for a themed bar crawl, staggering around half blind after drunkenly attempting to stick my big blue glittery falsies back down and inadvertently glueing an eye together. Ohhh velvet...

Anyway, enough of my misfortunes. I want to talk about velvet- the fabric that is. I'm dying to wear some this season, teamed with something black and lacey.

On the train back to Yorkshireland, I was reading Marie Claire's September issue (swiped from our neighbours on holiday by two of my, very naughty, friends) and looked like a bit of a lune to be perfectly honest as a had a bit of a chuckle to myself.

I was reading Anna Pursglove's account of this year's Autumn/Winter, entitled 'The Season Your Boyfriend Just Won't Get'. I laughed because it's so true, especially in my case (my man hasn't yet got his head around the concept of leggings- "so, you can wear them as trousers sort of? Aren't they like tights?")

This season, it's all about massive chunky knits, tweed and an overload of fur- a far cry from last year's thigh high boots and body con.

Knitwear at D&G (trimmed with yet more fur)

Country chic at Rag & Bone

 Fur at Chanel

What a difference a year makes: Prada A/W 09

In the words of Ms.Pursglove, we seem to be in "the season that sex forgot". But all is not lost.

I'll be going all vamp at night. Lace, leather and velvet have made a few appearances- the indulgent fabrics are usually in there somewhere at this time of the year.

Ralph Lauren had some great velvet bits in my new favourite colour, like, ever. This vampy red colour:

Lace was big at Christopher Kane. I really like the little collars his stuff had going on too.

Givenchy's lace pieces were sexy too- no doubt about that.

So there you have it. Some hope for looking hot this winter! My inspiration?

Morticia Adams- arguably the best vamp of all time

I can't find much velvet on the high street yet, Topshop haven't delivered the goods. Have you seen any great pieces?

I think velvet might be a surprise thrift winner though. Velvet's had its moments in past years; I once had a bright orange velvet shirt in the 90s, no word of a lie. Old velvet clothing is usually pretty unwanted- most people think it's dated. I'll let you know if you find anything.

As for the lace, Topshop has redeemed itself as these are now on my shopping list:

Lace bandeau body, £20
Mesh and lace skirt, £20

I'm not sure how on earth I'd wear the skirt though, I'm not really partial to flashing my rear in public. Maybe some sequin hotpants?

Happy shopping x
