Vintage tees and skinheads

Hello strangers!

Sorry for my absence; having a full time job is taking its toll!

For those who didn't know, I'm now an E-Commerce Assistant at Flannels Fashion and loving it!

I've even been able to help out with their blog and write a few bits myself. Here's the latest one I wrote.

So yeah, working 9-5 has been so nice after 3am starts in my stint at the airport. I never thought I was a 9-5 sort of girl but it seems that I am- must be growing up!

I haven't had time to do much shopping and mooching around at places of interest, hence not a lot to blog about...

However I thought today I'd share this cool Levi's T shirt I picked up at my local Oxfam for £5.99- yeah I know, Oxfam is extortionate! But I'd have paid a tenner in a vintage shop so not too horrific.

Tshirt: £5.99, Oxfam; Earrings: 50p, car boot sale; Inverted Cross Necklace: ASOS; Boots: Kurt Geiger

It's a men's medium which is what I like in these sorts of T shirts. Rather than hacking the sleeves off as I normally would, I just rolled them up- it is winter and all.

P.S. I've been messing around with Photoshop if that wasn't already obvious. It's also pretty clear I'm not great at it! I'm trying to teach myself how to edit photos to look like they're taken with a Lomo camera. they're coming out a bit dark so will have to work on that (the T shirt is old and faded out to a grey colour by the way).

The boots I'm wearing are an early Christmas present from the boyf.

I actually chose them myself! They're from Kurt Geiger. I was going to buy them then my boyf divulged that he was intending to buy me a pair for Christmas anyway so it made sense to just get them for me.

I've been wearing them already because I desperately needed something substantial on my feet to fight the awful, wet weather conditions.

I wanted something that was my style, yet was smart enough to wear for work so these flat chelsea boots fit the bill perfectly.

On a side note, did you all watch This is England '88?

I absolutely love the series- I think even more than I loved the film. Though for me, the first series was slightly better.

One thing that never changes though is the amazing styling. Lol is up there with my biggest style icons.

What did you think of '88?

Lately.

Todays post is more of a picture montage.

As my regular readers may have gathered, I'm rather busy at the moment! I have so much uni work it's untrue, but everything will come together- I hope.

Not one to leave my little blog in the lurch though, I've taken a few pictures of things I've been up to/ buying/wearing recently. Enjoy!

I went charity shopping a few days ago so most of this stuff is what I bought on the trip (I went to Harborne, Birmingham by the way).

Scarf (worn as turban), £1.50, charity shop

I'm a bit obsessed with wearing vintage scarves as turbans at the minute...
I can't find the tutorial I used, but there are some great video tutorials on YouTube.

Another scarf (£1) and vintage Jane Shilton chain bag (£3.99) I picked up charity shopping:

Vintage Chiltern bag from eBay- only £3.50!

Finally bought the Barry M nail effects shatter polish. I've heard the Models Own one is a bit shite- have you?

Soon to be baking, when I get time. Pink cake tins (£4.99 for two, Aldi), cake stand (£6, vintage home fair, Birmingham).

And here's another picture of me to cheer you all up- me rocking dissertation chic, i.e. grubby tied-up hair, baggy men's shirt, boyf's tee with sleeves hacked off, leggings, flip flops and geek specs (I assure you they have real lenses, so a necessity rather than an accessory!)

And do check out my project's blog to see how it's coming along.

Hope everyone's enjoying the sunshine- I'm not!

P.S I just wanted to say a little thanks to everyone who reads my blog. I'm still amazed by how many views I get even when I go walkabout for a week or so and don't post anything! I've just gone over the 50 follower mark and I'm chuffed :) so yeah, thanks to the people who follow me and leave comments on my posts- I'm very grateful!

Blazer glory

I've been meaning to post about this purchase for a while but third year uni rubbish and illness has delayed the process.

Anyway I picked up this awesome blazer from a charity shop in Kings Heath, Birmingham for £5.

Earrings: Topshop Necklace: Clothes Show T shirt: £5, Motel (sale) Belt: Primark Trousers: £3.99, vintage, eBay Wedges: New Look
It's vintage St. Michael at Marks and Spencers, complete with built-in shoulder pads; only problem is, it's a size 18.

I love the hot pink colour which fits well with the incoming Spring Brights trend. Wouldn't look out of place among the Jil Sander SS11 collection, no?

I thought I'd get it and sell it on but I'm struggling to part with it- it brings out my inner Kim Woodburn.

I think it works okay as a boyfriend-style fit though, don't you think?

The trousers are new too. They're vintage and were an eBay bargain at £3.99

I was a bit disappointed that they weren't more fitted below the knee, but I like the high waist.
You may also notice that I've gone and shaved my head (a bit). I had it done at the hairdressers two weeks ago (and paid a lot for it as I was given the 'Artistic Director' without requesting her, then not being told that I'd been booked in with her!) and had it shaved on a number three. No one was really paying it much attention so I had a bash at doing it shorter myself.

Turned out quite well I thought- won't bother visiting over-priced hairdressers next time!

Getting shirty

I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that sheer chiffon and silk shirts are everywhere at the moment!

YSL RTW SS11
Richard Nicoll RTW SS11

Cynthia Rowley RTW SS11
YSL RTW SS11
I've been mulling over the prospect of buying a nice one from Topshop for a while now, but I think the prices are extortionate!

Still, these ones are rather nice...

Sheer black open-back shirt, £38
Silk tab shirt, £40
Reluctant to shell-out 40 quid a shirt, I took a trip to Kings Heath to hunt some down, thrift style!

- This is a bit of an outfit post by the way; thought it was high time I posted some pictures of me in the clothes I buy like a proper blogger! Plus my new camera charger arrived today. I'm quite camera shy so be nice! I've added  details about the outfits where I've remembered them too.

So, the first shirt I picked up on my trip was this gorgeous cream silky one from The British Red Cross shop- a bargainous contrast to the Topshop ones at £2.50!

Shirt: £2.50, charity shop Necklace: gift, Earrings: Birmingham Rag Market Watch: charity shop Leggings: Topshop Wedges: New Look
I think I might take out the shoulder pads but I don't think they look too prominent anyway.

The second was this sheer one. It's a brand from Debenhams and was a mere £2.29.

Bowler hat: £3, Primark Earrings: car boot sale Necklaces: charity shops Shirt: £2.29, charity shop Watch: 50p, car boot sale Belt: 50p, charity shop Shorts: handmade by me from gifted 70s deadstock jeans Tights: Primark Shoes: Aldo
The third shirt I bought on my trip was this red short-sleeved one- £2.29 too.

Hat: as before Earrings: car boot sale Necklace: Clothes Show Shirt: £2.29, charity shop Belt: Primark Watch: free from car boot sale Belt: Primark Skirt: Topshop Tights: as before Boots: Dr Martens
I loved the detail on the shoulders but was a bit worried about my own shoulders looking huge in it- the shoulder pads inside were massive! In the changing room, some further inspection uncovered that they were sewn in all the way across rather than with just a couple of stitches; difficult to cut out?

Thankfully, I cheekily yanked at one and the stitching just came away- decision to buy made!

I think it looks great on teamed with a waist belt and the collar turned down; seeing as the boyfriend thinks I look like a "Chinese soldier" with it up!

Collar and neck detail
The label says 'Canda' which is a brand from, the now obsolete in the UK store, C&A.

You might recognise the shirt below from my last post.

Earrings: car boot sale Necklace: handmade by me Watch: 50p, car boot sale Shirt: COW vintage Belt and shorts: as before Bag: £8, vintage
It was on the sale rail at COW vintage (Digbeth store) and worked out at £1.50 with the buy-one-get-one-free offer.

I thought it would look good in summer tied up like this, especially when all the bright colours properly come in.

I also picked up this leopard print shirt from eBay for 99p- it's not as nice as some that I was watching, but I couldn't argue with the price.

Earrings: vintage flea market, Birmingham Shirt: 99p, eBay Necklace: modified from charity shop Belt: as before Bag: gift, vintage Leggings: as before Wedges: as before Lipstick: Mac (in 'Mac Red')- if you're interested in that sort of thing!
I'll leave you with a silly one of me. Wasn't paying much attention whilst the boyf was playing photographer and trying to take photos through the viewfinder!

Bits and pieces...

Here's a post of things that I either forgot to share at the time or just didn't get round to.

Waaaaaay back in December, my lovely uni girls and I had a fun 'secret Santa' exchange/boozy lunch (you can watch the video of the excitement here- on my friend Jess' awesome YouTube channel).

I was very happy to discover that my beautiful friend Louise was my Santa- I love her style!

She got me this gorgeous vintage-style locket.

(WARNING: Photos are not great. Haven't yet fathomed out how to take pictures of small shiny objects with my new camera! Any tips?)

Jewellery box (possibly)- charity shop

I photographed it by some of my other jewellery (even though the camera wouldn't focus on the bloody thing) so you can see how nice and big it is. Big, gold jewellery? Yes please.

It's not very clear in the pictures, but the rose cameo is really intricate and pretty. My boyfriend was having a good inspection of it the other night and said, "I bet some bloody work went into that!". Well, I think it's more likely to be made by some kind of machine than hand-crafted by Native American Indians- but beautiful nonetheless!

She also got me this cute vintage bag.

The leather is really buttery soft and I love the little gold details at the top. It's quite small so I've been using it as an evening bag.

I think the brooch I mentioned in the last post would look really nice on it, though I can't get it through the leather- might have to enlist a man to do it!

And...

Whilst at uni a week or so ago, I found myself with a bit of time before my train home so decided to quickly pop to bodycare to get some mouthwash, but me being me, fannied about a bit too long and missed it! With another half an hour to wait, I decided to pop into the Perry Barr Age Concern by the station.

And glad I did!

I managed to get myself another tartan scarf- 50p.

And an aran knit jumper for £3.

70s looking I thought, what do you reckon? I don't personally like the style (the neck and shape mostly) but thought I could sell it on. The ones on ebay don't seem to be making much at the moment and wondered whether I might try ASOS Marketplace- anyone had any experience with selling on there? Would love to hear!

And to those with a critical eye who may have noticed that I always use my bedcover as a background (if you haven't, I've just announced my lame secret), I apologise. It's just there and, well, better than the floor ey?

Part two

In my last post, I mentioned that I'd continued my charity shopping day onto Skipton- here's the buys!

(Slowly beginning to catch up with these posts now)

I'd been on the lookout for a tartan scarf for a while, and managed to get this checked one (not quite the style I was after, but I like it) at the Cancer Research shop for £2.50.

The little gold rose brooch was about 75p, I think, and is from the Martin House Children's Hospice shop, where I also got this book:

I'm still at a loss as to why I bought it; I can't, and have never attempted to knit, EVER.

I think my love for anything brash and 80s, ridiculous jumpers in particular, might've influenced the decision.

To be fair, I would like to learn to knit; bit late for a New Year's resolution though, maybe next year.

I also picked up this great cardigan which has fast become one of my favourites.

I actually saw this in the window whilst the shop was closed over Christmas, was so chuffed it was still there.

The decorative bit on one of the batwing sleeves is quite unusual, with little applique flowers, beads and pearls sewn on.

And I can't tell you how soft it is; in the window I thought it was mohair, but it is in fact angora and lambswool- so cosy! It was only £3 too.

More posts to come, lots of new stuff!

Just a quick one...

Despite having an exam on Friday which I'm immensely unprepared for, I thought I'd do a quick, picture-lead post to tide you lot over- I've been a bit neglectful again haven't I?

So, at Christmas-time I was pretty brassic and couldn't really indulge in much sales shopping, but there's always funds-enough to do it thrift style!

My local Age Concern (still not yet made the switch to Age UK), in Settle, North Yorkshire, is one of the few charity shops I know of to put on a 'New Year's sale'- you'd think things were cheap enough right? But who am I to complain...

So as there was 50% off pretty much everything, I thought I'd go have a look. I picked up this belt for a pocket-friendly 50p:

It's leather with little silver and gold tone metal accents. I've seen a few of these in COW vintage, Birmingham- I think they're probably American and seem to have a bit of a line dancing influence (mine has little cowboy boots on)

And I also got this small navy bag for 75p:

Excuse the sinful, chipped nail polish
Thought it was quite cute and most of my bags are black, so a good addition I think.

My Age Concern also has an amazing fancy dress section, which I hadn't visited since I was 17 for a fancy dress day in sixth form.

(This is the place where all the great fur coats are exiled)

I had a little time to kill so popped up. It really is amazing!

The majority of the stuff up there is vintage- some really obscure stuff which they would make a killing off if they sold it on eBay!

Anyway, here's a few pictures I took up there on my phone:

I attemped to buy this vintage sequin top but they wouldn't give in!

They're very reluctant to sell items from the fancy dress area. I was told that they often chuck some of it out (!!!) when there's too much stuff and they were planning to have a mass cull in due course- gutted I'm back in Birmingham now!

Later that day I went to Skipton to do a little more charity shopping- I'll post my buys sometime after Friday.

(I'll also do that outfit post soon too. Promise!)

Well, turned out to be a longer post than I expected! I always feel the need to narrate what I've done and indulge in a bit of rambling- must be the journalist in me.

Oh and...

I've had a lot more views these past two weeks, despite not posting for some time; mainly thanks to an old post of mine on retro swimwear, mentioning the impossibly gorgeous Katy Perry.

So for all my new readers, made up no doubt of horny teenage boys google-ing 'Katy Perry in a bikini', here's another:

Goal for the summer?!
Enjoy!
